HISTORY

Taylor and his twin sister Siera were born to a fisherman and his wife in Azudesce, where they lead a happy, if simple, life. Childhood was filled with many a story of the Dragons told by the twins’ mother, who had been a sister once but left active role in the Church to get married and raise her family. Taylor was especially moved by his mother’s devotion, to an extent where he came to believe that everything that happened, bad and good, big or small, was all part of the Dragon’s will, fated to happen. This belief in Fate would stick with him from childhood to his teenage years, a time that was plagued with misfortune.

When Taylor was fourteen, his mother became ill with consumption. Soon afterwards, she died. The family was grief-stricken, but eventually they moved on with their life, knowing it was what she would have wanted. Then four years later, the twins lost their father in a fishing accident which also claimed his father’s boat and much of the family’s money. This loss once again devastated Taylor, but he eventually was able to accept it as the Dragon’s will and moved into the position of chief breadwinner for himself and his sister. He soon followed in his father’s footsteps as a fisherman, though without owning a boat of his own, he was unable to make the same profit that his father had.

One year later, Taylor barely makes enough money for him and Siera to get by, but this never troubles him. He is not above begging for alms from the Church, since he knows from his mother’s stories that they are for people in his position. What money he does make, Taylor never saves, spending every penny the minute he gets it on food or clothes or whatever they need or want. This attitude has led to many disagreements with his sister, who feels that they should save all they can, in order to one day get ahead. However, Taylor is resigned to living his life day by day; taking the path the Dragons have laid out for him one step at a time. However the constant arguments have lead to him spending more time away from home, in hopes of keeping the peace, though this inevitably just causes more disagreements.

Other than making and spending money, Taylor’s one great pastime is writing. He is a very private about this, as he writes for himself and only himself. This exclusion includes both his parents, when they were alive, and his sister, though he’ll share most anything else with her. His room is filled with paper and books, all telling the story of a young man named Tristan and his life. Taylor keeps every bit of the story he has ever written, from the earliest drafts to the most polished copies, and is constantly re-reading and revising. This hobby is his main indulgence and purchasing supplies for it is one of his greatest expenses, other than food.

Recently, Taylor has found himself having less patience than usual with his sister, perhaps connecting in some way to the discovering of their magical journals. He has also hit some rough patches financially, first because of the hurricane season - which not only kept him from working but also left Siera hurt and unable to work herself - and later by a smaller than usual catch, resulting in lower wages. Taylor, believing that misfortune is caused by the Dragons' displeasure, was at first unable to understand why this was happening, however he eventually decided that the reason behind it was Siera and her constant covetting of greater things, instead of appreciating what she has.

PERSONALITY

The best descriptor of Taylor is “nonchalant.” He is very calm and collected about almost everything, to the point where he sometimes seems rather detached. This especially occurs in his arguments with Siera, though his actions show that these do boterh him more than he lets on. The constant complaints do wear him out, to the point where he just needs to get away, either to the seas to work or to his room to write. Despite this he does love his sister and he does take the job of supporting her very seriously, though he has never seen the need for the luxuries that he knows she desires.

Taylor is quite unambitious, failing to see the need for having great plans for life, since you never know what will happen next. He’s seen quite clearly that what you expect to happen rarely does, and what you least expect is all too frequent and thus has just consigned himself to the Fate which he so strongly believes in. Taylor is deeply religious, praying to the Dragons every day and attending Church services regularly. His faith has been deeply tested by the events surrounding his parents’ death, but it has come out of that stronger than ever.

However, it is only through his writing that Taylor is able to maintain his calm exterior. He channels all of his stronger emotions into his story, letting it bear the weight of these thoughts and feelings. The tale of Tristan is the only outlet Taylor allows himself for these emotions, keeping them tightly under wraps at all other times.

The only time Siera has ever really seen Taylor angry was when he caught her secretly reading his writing. The portion of the story which she read is the only section to have ever been destroyed.

APPEARANCE

Taylor is above average height and has a very slim build, though he is stronger than he looks due to his work. He has short black hair, blue eyes, and wears thin-framed glasses. Most of his clothing is quite ragged and most of it is stained with various fish guts, as he is more likely to spend money on new parchment and ink than on clothes. He does however have a nice set of clothes to wear to Church services and on special occasions.
